Carolina Wildlife Care (CWC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit wildlife rehabilitation center located in Columbia, South Carolina, is recruiting for two key positions, Wildlife Rehabilitation Director and Executive Director.  With a 22 year history and treatment of more than 55,000 sick, injured and orphaned wildlife, CWC has a strong reputation and solid legacy for supporting and protecting wildlife in South Carolina. 

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Director position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the center, including direct wildlife care.  The Executive Director position is tasked primarily with fundraising, education, community awareness and outreach.  Both positions are exciting opportunities to continue the meaningful work of this vital organization and ensure the ongoing care and rehabilitation of wildlife in our state.

Executive Director – Posted 9/25/11  

The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of Carolina Wildlife Care, Inc., (CWC).  This position reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for leading the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives effectively and efficiently.  This individual will be responsible for carrying on the strong legacy of CWC through community outreach and fundraising.

Expectations of the Executive Director include:

1. Provide leadership in developing program, organizational, fundraising and financial objectives with the Board of Trustees and staff, and implementing plans and policies authorized by the board.

2. Ensure revenue generating and fundraising activities to develop existing program operations and objectives.

3. Develop and enhance relationships with donors, community partners and foundations.

4. Provide organization visibility within the community through public relations and promotional efforts.

5. Develop and effectively implement community service and CWC educational programs.

6. Recruit, orient, train, and develop volunteers in fundraising and program activities and supervise Wildlife Rehabilitation Director on training and development of animal care staff.

7. Lead staff, Finance Committee, and the Board in preparing a budget; ensure that the organization operates within budget guidelines.

8. Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

Qualifications Minimum undergraduate degree; preference for marketing, public relations, management, or related fields.

  •  Minimum three years experience with operation of non-profit or similar small business, preferably wildlife conservation or similar area of interest.

  •  Supervisory management experience and strong passion for the mission of CWC necessary.

  •  Demonstrated development skills, including special event and major donor fundraising, and grant writing.

  •  Excellent written, oral, interpersonal communication skills are essential.

  •  Strong computer skills, particularly desktop and web publishing essential.

  •  Ability to work and communicate effectively with a variety of people from volunteers and staff to business owners and board members.

  •  Experience in media relations and communications a plus.

Position is full time.  Compensation package based on experience.  Criminal background check, drug screen, and reference checks will be required as a condition of employment.

Wildlife Rehabilitation Director - Posted 9/25/11                                                                                                    

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Director oversees the daily operations of the wildlife center.  The Wildlife Rehabilitation Director reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for all aspects of wildlife care, the internship program and animal care training for an established Wildlife Center.

Some of the responsibilities in managing the rehabilitation program include:

1. Ensure that all wildlife care needs are met daily and maintain high quality of care standards.

2. Administer medical and supportive care for admissions according to CWC rehabilitation standards or current acceptable standards in wildlife rehabilitation.

3. Supervise the scheduling, daily activities and performance of wildlife rehabilitation staff, interns and volunteers.

4. Over see the care and well being of a small collection of CWC non-releasable wildlife ambassadors.

5. Provide public assistance both in person and over the phone regarding wildlife rescues, transport, emergency care and wildlife conflict resolution.

6. Manage projects/events at the wildlife center to include the Wildlife Baby Shower, work days, training classes and visits by guests.

7. Maintain inventory and oversee the purchasing of animal diets and rehabilitation supplies within budget guidelines.

8. Coordinate animal visits and maintain positive relationships with local veterinarians.

9. Maintain accurate animal records, reports and statistics for reporting purposes.

10. Establish and maintain sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with veterinarians, other wildlife rehabilitation groups and community organizations to address wildlife center’s needs.

11. Be responsible for the recruitment and training program for over 100 volunteers, in conjunction with the Volunteer Coordinator.

12. Be responsible for operating within budget guidelines and coordination with Executive Director in preparing an annual operations budget.

Qualifications

  •  Minimum undergraduate degree and two years experience working full time in a wildlife rehabilitation center or equivalent animal care facility.  Preference will be given to candidates with experience in non-profit/volunteer organizations.

  •  Must have experience working with a variety of wild birds and considerable knowledge of the rehabilitation of other species, including mammals and reptiles.

  •  Possess a strong commitment to the care and conservation of wildlife.

  •  Experienced in supervising and training staff, volunteers and/or interns.

  •  Strong organizational skills and the capacity to handle multiple responsibilities.

  •  Ability to act quickly, efficiently and calmly under stressful conditions and maintain enthusiasm and a professional demeanor.

  •  Capacity to delegate tasks and motivate others to perform according to skills and abilities.

  •  Ability to provide offsite wildlife care during nesting season, or as needed.

  •  Must be capable of making euthanasia decisions and performing euthanasia.

  •  Must be able to lift 50lbs and work in all types of outdoor conditions.

  •  Must have or be able to obtain a valid South Carolina state driver’s license with no record of major or repeated minor traffic offenses.

  •  Ideal candidate will have experience in compiling and analyzing animal intake statistics and submitting state and federal reports.

  •  Must have or be willing to obtain pre-exposure rabies and tetanus vaccinations.
