Carolina Wildlife Care, South Carolina’s most comprehensive wildlife rehabilitation center, has scheduled its Spring 2008 Wildlife Baby Shower
As a wildlife rehabilitation center, Carolina Wildlife Care is normally not open to the public. This annual event provides a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a wildlife rehabilitation center, as well as a chance to watch CWC staff and volunteers as they care for orphaned wildlife babies. Visitors will have the opportunity to hear the stories behind patients’ arrivals, learn what is required to re-introduce an animal back into the wild, and even meet some of the non-releasable wildlife that serve as the Center's wildlife ambassadors.
The wildlife baby shower will be held on:
- Saturday, April 19 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
- Sunday, April 20 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
The price of admission to attend the event is a donation from the CWC Wish List.
The Center will also be offering a special “Breakfast with the Birds” from 8:30 to 10:00 am on Saturday morning. Enjoy muffins, fruit and other tasty temptations while you visit the center before it opens to the public. Cost is a $20.00 donation per person. For more information or to reserve your space at this early bird special, call us at 803-772-3994.
During the baby shower, visitors will tour inside the Center's building, including the main rehabilitation room, exam room, and reptile room. In addition, guests will get to "meet" some of the Center's wildlife ambassadors that CWC wildlife educators use in school education programs to share insights on the issues facing wildlife today. Ambassadors include, Virginia opossums, an eastern gray squirrel, an American crow, and various reptiles, including an eastern box turtle and a corn snake.
Weather permitting, other areas outside the Center will be open for viewing including “Turtle Park”, songbird aviaries, flight cages, and mammal habitats.
Each year, between 3,200 and 3,700 patients are brought to the Center for a second chance ranging from hummingbirds to flying squirrels to snapping turtles. "The Center provides injured and orphaned wildlife medical and supportive care so that they can once again live life in the wild,” says Carolina Wildlife Care Executive Director, Joanna Weitzel. "At Carolina Wildlife Care, we restore the delicate balance of nature.”
Carolina Wildlife Care is the leading wildlife rehabilitation center in South Carolina providing care for injured, orphaned and displaced native wildlife. Founded in 1989, the Center has cared for more than 37,000 wild animals representing close to 200 species of native wildlife, including songbirds, waterfowl, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The Center’s public education program is designed to create an awareness of the challenges facing wildlife today and encourage changes in human behavior to minimize the harmful impact on South Carolina’s wildlife. The Center not only educates the public to care about wildlife, but also trains other wildlife and animal care professionals on providing rehabilitative care for wildlife in need.
Carolina Wildlife Care, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 organization and receives no state or federal funding. Operations are funded through donations, fundraising, and grant assistance. A small staff and a core of 100 volunteers and rehabilitators are trained on providing treatment and overall care to wildlife patients.
